iVoiceIdeas.com Opposes SOPA and PIPA Legislation Giving Government Content Control Over The Internet

2012-01-19

AUSTIN, Texas ---- Two bills before Congress, known as the Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House, would censor the Web and impose harmful regulations on American business. Sites like iVoiceIdeas.com where users post content and express opinions would be subject to government censorship and retribution under these bills.

Members of Congress are trying to do the right thing by going after pirates and counterfeiters but SOPA and PIPA are the wrong way to do it. Laws aimed at common problems usually create unintended consequences without stopping the targeted behavior. For example, after 30 years and billions of dollars, the war on drugs is a failure. SOPA will not stop piracy any more than laws against online gambling have stopped gambling. But, it will dampen free speech, blockade innovation and reduce American creativity – in other words the unintended consequences of this bill will be worse than the problem it is trying to solve.

Under this law, the U.S. government could order the blocking of sites by using methods similar to those employed by China. Among other things, search engines could be forced to delete entire websites from their search results. That’s why Google, Facebook, Wikipedia and most other innovative Internet job creators in America are working hard to stop this legislation before the damage is done.

Law-abiding U.S. Internet companies would have to monitor everything users link to or upload or face the risk of time-consuming litigation. That’s why AOL, EBay, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Mozilla, Twitter, Yahoo and Zynga wrote a letter to Congress saying these bills “pose a serious risk to our industry’s continued track record of innovation and job-creation.”

Wikipedia is dark today in protest over this legislation. Let’s use this moment of darkness to shine a light on the damage this law will cause by contacting your legislator and asking them to vote no on SOPA and PIPA.
