Thales: Organizations In Brazil Increase The Deployment Of Encryption In Response To Compliance Regulations and Cyber Attacks

2012-06-13

SÃO PAULO ---- Thales, leader in information systems and communications security, today releases the 2011 Brazil Encryption Trends Study. The report reveals that there is a growing awareness in Brazil of data security risks and deployment of encryption solutions to counter those risks. This is the only annual report that focuses on the use of encryption in Brazil and is part of a global study conducted by independent research firm the Ponemon Institute and commissioned by Thales.

More than 4,000 business and IT managers were surveyed in the US, UK, Germany, France, Australia, Japan and for the first time this year includes data from Brazil.

The report found that encryption deployment rates vary across different countries. However, what is clear is that encryption is growing in importance in all the countries, with companies increasingly deploying encryption as part of an overall data protection strategy.

Among Brazilian organizations, the main driver for deploying encryption solutions is to protect brand or reputation damage resulting from a data breach (44%). Also important for Brazilian organizations is ensuring that privacy commitments made by their organizations are honoured (31%).

Encryption is now viewed as a strategic issue with business leaders gaining greater influence over their organization’s encryption strategy. The study shows that as in other countries the CIO, CTO or IT leader still tends to be the most influential figure in deciding encryption strategy (22% of Brazilian respondents), but non-IT business managers have an increasing role in determining that strategy (14% of Brazilian respondents), demonstrating that encryption is no longer seen as just an IT issue but one that affects an entire organization. This also may reflect a broader trend in the consumerization of IT.

Encryption features considered most important in Brazil are independent certification against security standards (45%), protection of keys via dedicated hardware devices (44%) and automated management of encryption keys (43%).

“The fact that Brazil has been included in this high-profile report for the first time acknowledges the massive steps organizations in Brazil have taken to address their data security challenges”, says Cindy Provin, vice president of the Americas, Thales e-Security. “This makes Brazil a particularly exciting market for us and that’s why Thales e-Security is establishing a local footprint and investing in the region.”

The Thales nShield hardware security module (HSM) has recently undergone laboratory testing and is awaiting final certification from The Brazilian National Institute of Information Technology (ITI) for use with ICP Brasil, Brazil’s national public key infrastructure. nShield HSMs provide high assurance encryption processing and protection for the keys and applications that underlie critical security processes helping with encryption, data protection and compliance needs.

525 business and IT managers at organisations in Brazil were surveyed for the report. The first encryption trends study was conducted in the US in 2005. Since then the scope of the research has been expanded to include countries in various regions of the globe.

Thales will be exhibiting alongside First Tech on booth #B38 at CIAB Febraban 2012, Transamérica Expo Center, 20-22 June 2012.
